I know I can’t.

Sorry, I’ll provide some context in case you’re wondering what I’m talking about.

Four years ago, Cara and I got married! Crazy, isn’t it?

If you’d like to relive the moment with us, the pictures are still up.

Oh, and four years and a day ago, Garrett got chicken parmesan dumped on his lap at our rehearsal dinner.

Good times :-)

Wow, it is almost March already. Too bad time doesn’t work the way it did when I was a kid and couldn’t wait for Christmas or my birthday or something. It took forever for things to happen back then. Now… well, let’s just say things happen too fast now.

Cleo is still about the same as always. Garrett came to visit us this past weekend and Cleo pretty much hissed at him the whole time. Here is a picture of her fighting her arch-nemesis, the water bottle:

Die water bottle, die!

At church, Cara and I have been busy working with the kids on Leadership Training for Christ. We’ve been meeting every Sunday afternoon with them working on everything from t-shirt design and banners to song leading and Bible quiz. Here’s a picture from one of our meetings:

Kids working on LTC

I think we’ve got 16 kids total involved which is great. Speaking of church, we just moved into our new auditorium this past Sunday. Here’s a picture of the new auditorium when it was still being worked on:

The uncompleted auditorium

And here is a picture of the completed auditorium:

The completed auditorium

It is a lot bigger than what we had and it is really nice. The seats are pretty comfy, too :-)

Speaking of time flying, one of us is enjoying a birthday today. It isn’t me… my birthday was last month. Yup, it is Cara’s birthday! So everybody, remember to say happy birthday to her and help her have a great day!

Cara while we were hiking

Happy birthday Cara!

I borrowed my friend Becky’s costume and sat at the front door in my “bubble bath” to greet our Trick-or-Treaters this year.

“How did she get in there?”

“Are you balloons for Halloween?”

“I had to come back and take your picture—can I take your picture?”

Last night, Chris and Stephanie had the church over for a Fall Festival, complete with food, pumpkin carving, a hayride, and a very last minute Trunk or Treat. We had a great time as you’ll see for yourself if you look at the pictures!

Poor rhododendron

This is the second set of plants I had to take back to Lowe’s after planting in the backyard this summer. It’s nice that Lowe’s a money-back guarantee so if you kill the plant within the first year, you can take it back. Granted, I got all my plants on clearance so they were half-dead to start with, but as you can see, I finished them off. Apparently, rhododendrons don’t like to be ignored.

However, as my next door neighbor told me when I was planting them, roses take abuse pretty well. Here are some pictures of the roses I planted at the same time as the rhododendron. Looking good!

Mo and I were going to visit some friends in the hospital (one of my clients had pneumonia and Gary Schaper had a hip replacement) and I wanted to get them gift certificates to a restaurant near the hospital so they could easily get something other than hospital food to eat.

First I went to El Lorito, a local Mexican restaurant where I have bought a gift card before.  They told me they didn't have any left.

There's not much else close to the hospital, so I was forced to resort to fast food.  I went into Wendy’s and asked if they had gift certificates.  The girl at the register told me they did not.  Another guy working there told me they did have some but not anymore.  The girl corrected him, saying, "No, those were coupons we ran out of."

At this point, I told Mo I would try Burger King and then I was giving up.  So I went into Burger King and asked if they had gift certificates.  The lady at the register didn't have a clue whether they did or not, so she asked the lady cleaning tables, who looked at me like I was crazy and said "We don't have gift certificates here."  This being the 3rd place I tried, I was disgusted and threw my hands up in the air and sighed as I started to leave.  About this time, a manager came to the front and asked the ladies working there what I wanted.  The table-cleaning lady responded, "She wanted gift certificates.  I told her we don't have any."  I don't know what made me stick around to listen to her response, but I did.  Then the manager said, "I thought we did have some in the back."  To which the table-cleaning worker replied, "No, we don't have any gift certificates...we have gift cards."
Unbelievable.  I looked at her incredulously and said (rather forcefully), "That's the same thing!"
The manager told me I'd have to excuse those two and sold me the gift cards.

The much-awaited day finally arrived! I have been growing my hair out to donate for quite a while now. I decided to donate it to a program by Pantene (see http://www.beautifullengths.com) because they require just an 8 inch ponytail rather than the 10-12 inches required by Locks of Love and other organizations. I ended up having two ponytails to donate because my hair is SO thick. So, now most of my hair is in an envelope ready to be sent off and I am enjoying my new, much lighter hairdo.

Cara's new hairdo... with Cleo

While I set the self-timer on the camera, Cleo got curious.

So I took another picture.

The following is a conversation that we had on the way to church one night.

Cara: "Did you see that?!?"

Mo: "What?"

Cara: "That guy! In the cemetary! With a metal detector!!!"

Mo: "I think it was a weed eater."

Cara: "Oh."

Laughter ensued.

Actually, I had LASIK back in January, so sorry for being late on posting this... anyway, here's the pre-op picture.

As you can see, I just couldn't see a thing. I had to squint to see anything at all (pictures dramatized for emotional effect). However, I've given the thumb's up seal of approval after the procedure.

And how stylish I look in those sunglasses!

I'm still a little groggy after the surgery, but hey, I'm smiling!

Good thing I had those goggles so that I could sleep so much better (hah, sleeping was a LOT harder with those on).

Since we're going to be so good about keeping you up to date on our lives, be sure to keep us up to date on yours as well.

Now to get used to writing 2007 instead of 2006...

The quote of the day this past weekend:

"You realize you're going to have to hold your Wii in your lap, right?"

Say it out loud.

Pretty funny, huh?

We were riding back to Mo's parents' house from visiting my aunt Susan in Plano. She had given me bags and bags of clothes and goodies which filled the entire back seat of Mo's Mom's truck barely even leaving room for me to sit. As we were about to stop at Target to look for the Christmas gift Mo wanted (a Nintendo Wii, which is pronounced  like the word "we"), I posed the above question to him. I got a lot of laughter in response.

So, way back in September, Cara had LASIK surgery. We even said that we would post pictures soon... well, I don't think that 2 months later can really be defined as soon, do you?

Sorry about that. To alleviate all of the pain associated with having to wait that long to see pictures (sorry Heather!), we're going to go ahead and post those pictures now. In this first picture, you can tell that Cara is very sad because she hasn't had her surgery yet and has to wear glasses.

Cara is sad because she has to wear glasses.

Luckily, though, just a short time later (like a hour or two at the most), I was driving her back home in the car with her laser eyes (I like to call them laser eyes).

Cara after LASIK surgery, with protective sun glasses.

See that smile? She's so happy that she can see! She did have to wear some pretty goofy sunglasses for a while whenever she was outside, but it was a small price to pay to be able to have perfect vision. Here she is after we got home.

Cara, post LASIK surgery, and happy!

That last picture was cheating a little bit, because she was supposed to keep her eyes closed for around 3 hours after the surgery. So, off to bed she went, with her snazzy sleeping goggles on.

Cara's snazzy sleeping goggles.

I told her it looked like she had pilot's goggles on. She was supposed to wear those in case she tried to rub her eyes in her sleep or something. She also had to wear them to work for a while, so that all of the kids at work didn't try to touch her eyes. Luckily, she doesn't have to wear those anymore.

Just recently, she went for another follow-up appointment and her vision is now a little better than 20/20 even! She has pretty much convinced me that I need to get my eyes laserfied, too, so I'm planning on going in January sometime.

So, I went to our eye doctor today for a regularly scheduled appointment. It was a fairly standard appointment, but I did notice something that I think warrants a small change...

You know how, when visiting an optometrist, they ask you to read the lowest line possible on the eye chart? And they ask you to do it for each eye?

What's to prevent someone from MEMORIZING the line for the first eye and just spouting it off for the next eye?!? Or even memorize it from the last time?!?

That's why I propose that eye charts use random numbers and letters. I predict that it will make the test much more accurate.

But then again, maybe I'm crazy for having noticing little things like this.

David

Note - my eyes actually have different prescriptions so the eye chart actually DOES look different between my right eye to my left eye. I'm not completely crazy.

But honestly, no one cares about that - they want to see the pictures from vacation! So, it is my pleasure to inform you that we've posted pictures from our Alaskan cruise. We left from Vancouver and stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and finally Whittier. We flew out of Anchorage. It was a lot of fun, but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Last night, Cara and I were driving back from church during a thunderstorm. The entire time, I kept wishing that I had my digital camera with me, because the lightning was amazing! The storm was almost past just as the sun was going down, so the entire sky was almost golden in color. There was also a full rainbow all the way across the sky. While all of this was going on, the lightning was filling the sky, shooting from cloud to cloud. (side note - I'm not a writer, so if my descriptive writing skills are lacking, I apologize)

Well, today at work, I notice a post on digg about "incredible pictures" and "the moment lightning shared the sky with a rainbow." Hmm... that's interesting. But surely it couldn't be Fort Smith, Arkansas, now could it? But it is! Check out the digg post here.

The actual website with pictures is here at Daily Mail. The craziest part of all is that this Daily Mail site is apparently a British site! Be sure to check out the pictures.

Tonight, we had some fun taking more pictures of our kitten Cleo. Over the past couple of weeks that we have had her, she has gone from tiny little kitten to crazy tiny little kitten. She now has no problems whatsoever jumping onto the couch and she has absolutely no fear of anything. Tonight, she decided that she would conquer Cara's Clifford (the big red dog) doll that she uses in her speech therapy. After that, she somehow crawled into a plastic bag. Needless to say, we had to let the cat out of the bag. Haha... yeah. Anyway, check out the pictures here.

Maybe we need a Cleo the Cat category :-)

As Cara mentioned earlier, we just celebrated our one year anniversary. For the occasion, we spent a night at the lodge at Mt. Magazine, which just recently opened. We had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the scenery and the views. Unfortunately, the lodge's website is sort of lacking on pictures, so we took quite a few and have posted them under our photos section. Check them out. If you're looking for a nice place to relax and you're in the area, check out Mt. Magazine. I hear it's the highest point between the Rockies and the Appalachians.

Last weekend, Mo and I celebrated our first anniversary.  We stayed at the brand new lodge at Mt. Magazine, one of Arkansas' state parks.  When we arrived on Thursday around lunchtime, we stopped at the visitor center and used the restrooms.  As I was washing my hands, I noticed a sign in the bathroom that had a picture of a beautiful sunrise and said something like, "Have an hour?  Walk out to Sunrise Rock."  I thought it sounded like a neat thing to do and told Mo about it.  He thought it sounded like way to early to wake up when we had planned to spend our anniversary weekend relaxing and sleeping late.  I agreed that he was probably right and pretty much forgot about it.

Friday morning I woke up and looked at the clock.  It said 5:30.  All of a sudden, I was wide awake.  I remembered the sign for Sunrise Rock and I got excited about the possibility of going after all.  Mo was fast asleep.  I got up quietly and started rummaging through our suitcase and the papers on the nightstand looking for the park brochure with the trail map.  I couldn't find it, but I woke Mo up in the process of looking.  I pulled on jeans and a shirt over my pajamas, slipped on some flip-flops and whispered to Mo that I was going to get another brochure.  When I got the new brochure, to my dismay, Sunrise Rock was not listed anywhere on the map.  So I went to the front desk at the lodge and asked the man working there if he knew where it was.  He had a look of disappointment so I asked if it was too late to try to go watch the sunrise.  He told me, no, it wasn't too late, but that he didn't know where Sunrise Rock was.  He said he remembered hearing about it and thought it must be on the north side of the mountain somewhere.

As I was ready to go back to my room and try to go back to sleep, he had an idea.  He said Patti (I can't remember if that was her name or not, but it will do) the cook just might know where it was, and I should go ask her.  The restaurant attached to the lodge was not opening for another hour and a half, but I tiptoed in, made my way toward the kitchen, and asked for Patti, apologizing for my intrusion.  Patti came out of the kitchen and left her biscuits to bake while she walked outside with me.  We went down the sidewalk behind the lodge and I could see the pretty colors of the sunrise beginning to peek over the mountains.  She said she didn't know where Sunrise Rock was either, but that she got a great view from that sidewalk every morning.  She got a free smoke break out of walking me outside to tell me she could not, in fact, answer my question, so I didn't feel too badly about taking her away from her cooking for a few minutes.

Well, I thought, if you can get this view from the sidewalk, we should be able to watch the sunrise from the balcony off of our room.  As I walked back toward the room, the nice man at the front desk asked if she had known where Sunrise Rock was and told me he'd tried to look it up on the internet for me in the meantime, but to no avail.  I got back to the room and convinced Mo, who was still sleeping peacefully before I interrupted him, to get out of bed and come out to the balcony.  Too bad I had not accounted for the indoor pool part of the building blocking our view.  Still, I was now on a mission to see this sunrise with my husband, so I talked him into getting dressed and coming down to the sidewalk where I'd stood with Patti.  By the time we got there, though, it didn't have all the pretty colors anymore, and I was disappointed.  So disappointed that Mo was willing to go back to the room, get the keys, and drive me around the mountain to look for Sunrise Rock.

As we walked back by the front desk again, the man working there told me he'd just called the lady who was opening the Visitor Center for the morning and she didn't have a clue where it was either.  I wonder who in the world posted that sign in the Visitor Center bathroom!

As we drove around Overlook Drive, I asked Mo to pull into one of the parking lots and let me out to get a better picture of the sunrise, even if it wasn't from Sunrise Rock.  He sat in the car and nodded off while I made my way down a little path which I soon saw was leading to a rock!  It had to be Sunrise Rock!  I ran back to the car to get Mo to join me and we made our way to the cliff.  The sky was pretty cloudy but it was pretty-especially the one bright spot trying to peek through.  Yes, it was the sun-already risen by this time.  We didn't get to see the sun rise from Sunrise Rock, but at least we have a story to tell.  How many husbands would put up with all of that?  I definitely got a keeper!

Living in Arkansas and driving to rural Waldron for work twice a week, I'm pretty used to seeing roadkill - squirrels, racoons, armadillos, and the occasional skunk. But today, I had a first - I saw a chicken in the middle of the road. I don't know why he started to cross the road. I just know he didn't make it all the way across. Guess Tyson won't get that one.

We have a new cat!

Her name is tentatively Cleo, but if you've got any other ideas for names, leave them in the comments. If you'd like to see a few more pictures of her getting acquainted with her surroundings, check out our pictures (the Photos link to the left).

Cleo came from Mansfield, AR (aka out in the country). She leaves behind two siblings who were adopted by one of Cara's coworkers. They all lost their mother to a gunshot wound. Apparently, some people out in the country just think cats are nuisances.

She's about six weeks old. She likes to be held and meow when she's not being held. Her food bowl is as big as she is and she has to climb in to eat.

In just over 24 hours, I will be skipping my grad school graduation. For those who didn't know, I've been working on my MBA for the past two years. My employer was willing to pay half the cost of tuition, so I couldn't really turn it down, though I probably would've preferred a more technical degree (I'm a computer nerd).

I didn't really want to wait for hours on end just to hear my name mispronounced. I know Cara didn't want to wait. My parents didn't want to wait - my mom had already told me that she would rather just come visit me than sit in a crowded stadium or gym while thousands of other names were yelled out. Maybe if I had more of an attachment to the U of A (like I did with Harding), it'd be different, but I've been a parttime student. Most of my classes weren't even on campus. I honestly just want to get my degree and have free nights again.

The final reason - I've still got 9 hours to go this summer so I'd rather wait until I'm really done :-)

Just a short post here, but I found an interesting website today that illustrates what things look like to people who are colorblind. Check out the website here. If you mouse  over the different views, it will change the picture of the flower and the 29 picture to show you what it would look like to someone who is colorblind.

Today I ate the best strawberry ever.  It was quite small really, and only pretty and red on one side.  To you, it might not have been all that impressive.  But to me-yum!  It was the first strawberry to grow (and not be eaten by a bird or some other stealthy creature before it reached it's full ripeness) on the plants I am growing in the backyard.  I planted strawberries and tomatoes and I said after I planted them that they'd better be good.  Getting the ground ready to plant was no easy task!  I had no idea how hard farmers must work.   If the rest of the "fruit of my labor" is as good as that first strawberry, it will indeed be sweet success.

I've been hearing from a lot of people lately that they want to hear some news from us. Well, without further ado, I'd like to share the story of LAWN MOWER MISSILES!

To the left, you will see a picture of a... well, the seed I guess... of a sweet gum tree. I don't know what the technical name is, but I've decided to call them lawn mower missiles.

Why, you ask?

You've never mowed over one, have you?!?

When you mow over a lawn mower missile, essentially what happens is the harmless sweet gum ball (for lack of a better word) becomes a highly dangerous projectile. Your lawn mower accelerates the ball to ridiculous speeds that give the sweet gum ball missile-like qualities, the likes of which your legs will wish they never knew.

Our yard is full of the things.

And they hurt... a lot.

Sure, laugh now. Just wait till you get hit by one of them. Then you'll understand.

Someone is on the road, but it isn't me. Cara and some friends from Memphis are on their way to the Atlanta area tonight for a wedding tomorrow (congratulations Melissa and Jamie!) so I'm holding up the fort while she's gone. Cara and I have been married just over 9 months now, so I haven't had the house to myself in a while... and MAN is it quiet! And no, I'm not saying Cara is loud!  ;-)  An empty house is just quiet! To fend the quietness off, I've been listening to some music (the new Switchfoot cd is good).

Anyway, Cara was telling me about getting to see her grandparents who live outside of Memphis today while on her way to Georgia. Cara and her grandfather went to the local library there where they have free internet access. Her grandfather had never used the internet before. Apparently he was amazed by it. I guess he liked our website alright, too. If I remember correctly, Cara said that he asked if there was a wire going from there to our house here.

By the way, sorry if I'm jumping topics all over the place. I think I'm just sort of rambling now. The effects of an early morning to get to work plus staying up late seem to affect my blogging skills. Maybe I should go to bed.

I just posted another photo album from Cara's 25th birthday party. For her birthday, Cara specifically requested a cookie cake. So that's what I got her. To each their own I suppose, eh? At the party, we ate cake (obviously) and snacks and also played some games.

The first game we played was Catchphrase, which is a sort of hot potato word game. You pass around the game, which will display a new word for each person. They have to get their team to say it without actually saying the word or saying what rhymes with it. You get the idea. While playing the game (guys versus girls), I discovered that guys and girls think differently. I've known that for a while, but the game further reemphasized that. For example, Cara had the word "booster rocket," which is one of the two side rockets that helps send spaceships into space. She didn't know what it was, so the first thing she said was "band." One of the girls yelled out boosters, as in band boosters. How in the world do you get from booster rocket to band booster?!? When the guys would get a word they were unfamiliar with, most of us sort of sat there and struggled to figure out what it was instead of going a different direction.

We also played Cranium, Cara's favorite board game. A few of the people hadn't played it before either, which became quite clear when one of them had to do a Sensosketch, which is where you have to draw your word with your eyes closed. It was also a Club Cranium, so both teams had to pick one person to draw the same thing while the rest of the team tried to guess what was being drawn. If you've played the game, you'll know that the Sensosketch falls under the "Creative Cat" category. As I said, this guy hadn't ever played the game. He began to draw a cat, and we guessed that much, but then we were stuck. Suddenly, the other team yelled out "glue" and that was the word! WHAT IN THE WORLD! But wait! His word was glue! But he didn't draw glue. He drew a cat... he said he just didn't know how to make it a "creative" cat. Basically, he had read the wrong word on the card. It was pretty funny.

Anyway, we had a lot of fun. And don't forget to check out the pictures!

For those who are interested, I've added a few things to the Photos page. We've got captions on some of the pictures now. At some point, I'm going to see about adding the ability for people to leave comments on the pictures as well, in the same way that comments can be left to blog posts, but that will be another day. Let us know what you think!

Okay, I couldn't resist this. How often is it that you see CNN.com post something about Tiger Poo?!?

Sorry, I'm easily entertained.
